Q: What publishing route should I take? Traditional Publishing, Self-Publishing, Hybrid
Q: Did you hire PR / publicists for your book launch?
A: Yes. In addition to my own organic marketing/launch efforts (and learning how to pitch myself as well), during the height of launch (before and 1-2 months following pub date), I hired a PR rep to pitch me to TV and large print. I also worked with a 2nd publicist who focused both on print and large, top 5% podcasts. As someone who launched a book with limited name recognition, these were optional investments I chose to make. Happy to make introductions to those contacts on request!
Speaking and TEDx
Q: How do I design a speech that sells?
As mentioned in the video, I accept several 1:1 speaking coaching engagements on a VERY limited basis. These are typically 4 sessions with a focus on finding your big idea and solidifying the main anchors that make up the arc of your talk, as well as getting a first draft going. Ongoing coaching/editing dependent on timing/situation.
Q: I want to do more speaking! How do I get speaking gigs?
A: In addition to the video above: My friend and fellow speaker, Jeff Harry, put together a great article for SpeakerHub on how to find places to speak. If you’re a female speaker, Innovation Women is another inexpensive, useful way to find out about speaking opportunities. It’s an aggregator of speaking engagements you can apply to and a community of resources.
Q: Do you have bureaus or agents helping you get speaking engagements?
A. Q2 2025 update: As of this update, I have worked hard to deepen my relationships with bureau partners and I’m doing more events with them this year. That said, the process to get there still mirrors what is shared in the video above – the interest picked up and people reached out only once my demand started to warrant it. The majority of my speaking revenue continues to still be from direct referral and direct leads.
Q: Who did your speaker reel?
A: I worked with a great video editing firm that focuses on keynote speakers that I strongly recommend! Message me directly and I’m happy to share details on investment and info so you can decide if it’s a good fit for you.
